Living on the Shangshu Street adjacent to the Moon Lake, Wang Yinglin, also called Bohou, Shenning Lodger or Houzhai, is a native of Ningbo. He entered the court in 1241 AD but later resigned the post as he offended powerful officials with his boldness to expostulate. After he returned to hometown, he dedicated himself to composing masterpieces which totaled more than 600 volumes in 20-odd genres. The 200-volume Yu Hai incorporates every piece of knowledge required in imperial examinations; Kunxue Jiwen, one of the three greatest notes in the Song Dynasty, features elaborative textual research; San Zi Jing (Three-Character Scripture), a masterpiece of enlightening and moral education for children, has been in vogue for more than 700 years and circulated wide over various overseas countries.
