Four Masters in the Chunxi Period (1174-1189 AD), or Four Masters in Mingzhou, refer to Yang Jian, Yuan Xie, Shu Lin and Shen Huan in the Southern Song Dynasty who followed the Mind Philosophy established by Lu Jiuyuan. They prioritized the practice of good virtues instead of pure academic studies, forming a Siming School of integrity and good virtues in the Moon Lake neighborhood while nurturing a large number of disciples. Wen Tianxiang (a renowned politician in the Southern Song Dynasty) esteemed the four scholars so much that he once exclaimed effusively, “The academic style of Shu Lin is like the gentle and soothing spring breeze; that of Shen Huan is like the solemn and icy autumn frost; that of Yang Jian feels like a wandering cloud upon a clear lake; and that of Yuan Xie is like lustrous jade and translucent ice. What a heyday of academic study in East Zhejiang with extraordinary scholars converging represented by Four Masters in the Chunxi Period.”
