A native of Yuyao, Huang Zongxi is also called Taichong, Debing or Nanlei and referred to by scholars as Mr. Lizhou. A Confucianist, historian, ideologist, geographer, astronomer and educator in the early Qing Dynasty, he was credited as “Father of Chinese Enlightenment” and “the Greatest Ideologist in the early Qing Dynasty”, an honor shared with Gu Yanwu and Wang Fuzhi. Huang once gave lectures in Wanshi Residence beside the Moon Lake, inspiring many local disciples such as Zhang Ruyi, Chen Xixia and Wan Sitong. Thus, the Moon Lake has borne witness to the activities of East Zhejiang School.
