Yuan’s Former Residence. The Residence is a Qing-style building, and is now a cultural site under municipal protection. Built during the reign of Emperor Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty (1821-1850), the main building faces south, and on the middle axis there are back seats, the main lobby, wing-rooms and the annex. Yuan Yangzhou, owner of the Residence, was positioned to Taotai, the Intendant of Circuit, and the renowned littérateur Yao Xie of the Qing Dynasty had ever made his residence in the house for quite a period of time and named it “A Humble Cottage by Lake”. The poetry society formed by him and other Ningbo litterateurs enjoyed great popularity. In the 1980s, Wu Guanzhong, a famous Chinese painter, captured the beautiful scene of the Residence on his way to Ningbo Railway Station, and created the well-known artwork named Two Swallows. Now the Residence has been turned into the Ningbo Tea Culture Museum, demonstrating Chinese tea culture and displaying Ningbo purple clay culture.
