Yanyulou Tower, located east of the Misty Islet, is a cultural site protected at the municipal level. It was built in the Daoguang Period of the Qing Dynasty. Facing east, the Tower is composed by the antechamber, the main building and two wing-rooms. It served as a library for Xu Shidong , a famous Qing-dynasty bibliophile and textual researcher of Ningbo, so it's also called the Lianhu Library Tower. Xu's courtesy name was Dingyu, and his pseudonym Liuquan. He is yet another representative of the Eastern Zhejiang Culture after Huang Zongxi, Wan Sitong and Quan Zuwang. During his lifetime, Xu composed and compiled over 30 books, including the Siming Congji and the Songyuan Siming Liuzhi edited which marked the rebirth of the six oldest local chronicles in Ningbo history. In his old age, Xu edited the Yinxian County Chronicle, following the examples of the biographies published by National Museum of History. During the process, he consulted extensively and conducted intimate examinations. As a book collector, Xu's pursuit is truly star-crossed, marked by multiple losses and gains. In total, he had gathered a collection of up to 200,000 volumes. There are totally three library towers, the Yanyulou Tower being the first. The third one called the Shuibeige Tower has been moved to the south of the Tianyige Museum (or Tianyi Pavilion) under protection.
